Unbeatable Value
The Kelly family of Newhaven Park took the step of going back into standing a stallion in 2013 and the horse that convinced them to re-enter the game was Delago Deluxe.
A $550,000 Magic Millions yearling bred in the purple at Baramul Stud, Delago Deluxe has been a head turner from day one.
The good looks that saw him snaffled by leading South African trainer Charles Laird quickly paid off on the racetrack in South Africa where Delago Deluxe was unbeaten at two, claiming Champion 2YO honours with a highlight win in the Group I Gold Medallion.
He returned at three to win the Group I Golden Horse Casino Sprint, seen as the equivalent of our Newmarket Handicap and in doing so earned himself a shot at a stud career back in Australia with continuing support from his South African owners.
With a very similar profile to ill-fated sire sensation Northern Meteor, another explosive Group I winning sprinting son of Encosta de Lago, Delago Deluxe has proven popular to date covering over 200 mares in his first two seasons at a fee of $11,000.
His offspring are strong, athletic bays like their sire and his select draft of youngsters entered for the upcoming 2015 Magic Millions National Weanling Sale are a glowing endorsement for their sire. Click here to see his entries.
With a growing number of sons and grand-sons of Encosta de Lago available to breeders this spring – nearly all of them unproven – it’s worth taking a good hard look at race performance and conformation before making any decisions.
On those indicators, Delago Deluxe finds himself in the top echelon of this group and priced at just $11,000 again this year may well provide some real value for the astute breeder if his stock come out running as he did.
“When you compare Delago Deluxe to Deep Field, Shooting to Win, Rubick and Eurozone he is incredible value,” said John Kelly.
“He was an unbeaten Group 1 winning Champion 2YO who came back at three to win another Group 1. He is also from one of the great families of the Australian stud book and we couldn’t be happier with his weanlings.”
