March 6, 2017Stakes Double for Newhaven Park
Newhaven Park celebrated a surprise stakes win early in the day at Randwick when their progressive juvenile Frolic landed the Group II ATC Reisling Stakes and then made it a stakes double when their star mare English captured the Group II ATC Challenge Stakes for the second year running.
Resuming from a spell following an unsuccessful spring campaign, English was back to her brilliant best when outgunning Redzel to win the 1000 metre sprint by a short head on very heavy ground. “The ground was a bit an unknown going it into,” said co-trainer Adrian Bott. “She was out on her feet at the 100m but showed what a tough filly she is.”
The daughter of Encosta de Lago was turned out in top order by Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott, who will look next to the Group I ATC Galaxy, before she seeks to defend her title in the Group I ATC All Aged Stakes, which she won last year over Black Heart Bart.
A homebred for Newhaven Park, English has won five of 13 starts earning over $2million in prizemoney. She is the best of two winners from dual Group II winning Anabaa (USA) mare Court, who was also bred by Newhaven Park as was her dam Splish!
They all descend from the family of outstanding racehorse and sire Grand Lodge (USA). Newhaven Park will offer the current yearling from Court, a filly by Redoute’s Choice at the 2017 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale as Lot 87.
