Australian Group I Winners in South Africa
A star studded program of stakes racing at Turffontein in South Africa on Saturday produced some great results for Australian bred horses with Wylie Hall and Willow Magic both capturing Group I events, the pair both sold at Magic Millions from the drafts of Newhaven Park and Newgate Farm respectively.
Progressive Redoute’s Choice colt Wylie Hall has been on a real upswing and confirmed his staying potential when scoring a half length win in the Group I South African Derby over 2450 metres.
The three year-old is prepared by Weiho Marwing for Michael Leaf and has won three races and placed three times from six starts, blossoming as a serious classic contender over the longer journeys.
A $205,000 Magic Millions purchase from the draft of Newhaven Park, Wylie Hall (pictured as a yearling) is a half-brother to Group I winning sprinter Absolute Champion and is one of seven winner from Ideal Planet mare Beauty Belle, whose family features Group I winners Grand Armee, Drum, Anamato and Dealer Principal.
Newhaven Park sold the current yearling from Beauty Belle, a colt by Encosta de Lago at the Magic Millions for $120,000 to Apollo Ng and the mare has a colt foal by Redoute’s Choice’s half-brother Manhattan Rain.
Wylie Hall is the 23rd individual Group I winner by Redoute’s Choice, his 12th 3YO Classic winner and among his 19 worldwide stakes-winners this season.
