August 4, 2015Delago Deluxe Seeks to Emulate Encosta Success
Tara Madgwick – Monday, 27 July 2015
Encosta de Lago is now retired from active stud duty, but his considerable presence stretches in every direction with successful sire sons, a legion of top producing daughters and a stakes-winner in his own right last Saturday with veteran gelding Smokin’ Joey taking out the Group III MRC Bletchingly Stakes at Caulfield.
A $1.5 million earner, Smokin’ Joey is one of six stakes-winners this season for Encosta de Lago, who will finish fifth on the Australian General Sires List by earnings and third on the Australian Broodmare Sires List by earnings.
With his oldest progeny just four year-olds, Encosta de Lago’s ill-fated sire son Northern Meteor will finish ninth on the General Sires List by earnings with eight stakes-winners and another of his best young sons Manhattan Rain sired a new stakes-winner in Adelaide on Saturday in Wild Rain to finish the season with an impressive four stakes-winners.
Waiting in the wings to continue the Encosta de Lago sire dynasty is Newhaven Park’s Delago Deluxe, a supremely talented dual Group I winning sprinter, who won the equivalent in South Africa of the Golden Slipper and Newmarket Handicap.
Delago Deluxe has covered over 100 mares in each of his first two seasons at a fee of $11,000 and remains at the same fee this year.
A magnificent individual, Delago Deluxe has imparted his strength and athleticism to his offspring and the Newhaven Park team look forward to presenting his first yearlings next year starting with Magic Millions at the Gold Coast.
