February 28, 2013Glyn Schofield tips Charlie Boy to upset Golden Slipper favourites
GLYN Schofield believes Charlie Boy can justify his lofty position in Golden Slipper betting at Rosehill on Saturday – with or without the presence of Gai Waterhouse’s top filly Overreach.
Waterhouse was still not certain whether her Golden Slipper favourite would line up in the Silver Slipper last night, preferring to wait until this morning before making her final decision.
Charlie Boy is a $15 chance in Golden Slipper betting and Schofield is impressed with his progression since a recent barrier trial after riding the Gerald Ryan-trained colt at trackwork yesterday.
“I’m very excited to be riding him this preparation,” Schofield said.
“I believe he is a horse with very strong ability. I think he is good enough to be considered a leading chance in the Golden Slipper.
“I really like the way Gerald Ryan is bringing him along. He felt nice in the trial and has continued to improve since then.
GLYN Schofield couldn’t believe he won, while Nash Rawiller was almost in a state of shock after he lost.
“From what I felt (yesterday morning), I’m expecting him to be very hard to beat on Saturday.”
Charlie Boy is a veteran of only one career start, getting the cash on debut at Rosehill last November.
Given her position as $4.60 favourite for the Slipper, Overreach will be expected to open at the top of betting for the Silver Slipper if she accepts.
News of Charlie Boy’s impressive gallop appears to have spread yesterday, with the TAB reporting strong support in Golden Slipper markets.
He firmed from $17 to $15, moving ahead of Safeguard and Whittington to be alone on the third line of betting behind Overreach and Villa Verde ($8).
“Charlie Boy is clearly our worst way in the Golden Slipper,” the TAB’s Matt Jenkins said. “He firmed from $26 to $17 and then we tightened him again to $15 yesterday on the back of more support. There seems to be a lot of hype around him.”
