July 23, 2016Prime Success with Newhaven Park Purchase
July 23 – It’s been a long time between drinks for handy mare Awasita, who carried the Prime Thoroughbreds colours to a well-earned win at Canterbury on Saturday.
An $80,000 Magic Millions purchase from the Newhaven Park draft, five year-old Awasita started her career in promising fashion winning three of her first four starts for Mark Kavanagh in Melbourne.
Now in the stable of Kris Lees, she had been thereabouts in recent runs in good company and at last cracked it for a win when surging at the right time to score a half-length win in the fillies and mares event over 1100 metres.
With five wins and seven placings from 30 starts, Awasita has earned nearly $250,000 in prizemoney.
“I’m just so thrilled to see her win another race, it’s like winning the Melbourne Cup,” said an elated Joe O’Neill.
“She is the most lovely mare and out of a sister to Magic Albert. She won almost $60,000 in the past year without winning a race, so to see her win one is just great.”
Bred by Newhaven Park, Awasita is one of four winners from four to race from good producer Aemilee, whose current yearling colt by Delago Deluxe made $240,000 at the Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale when snapped up by McEvoy Mitchell Racing.
Aemilee is due to foal again to Delago Deluxe this spring.
