June 2, 2016Smart Winner from Newhaven Park – Cadogan
May 18 – Promising two year-old colt Cadogan cast off maiden status with a dominant win at
Randwick on Wednesday to become the fifth winner for Smart Missile.
Trained by Bjorn Baker, Cadogan improved sharply at his third start when stepped up to 1400
metres, charging home from back in the field to win by nearly two lengths.
Winning rider Blake Shinn was full of praise for Cadogan.
The way he sprinted, I was quite taken aback,” Shinn said.
He did everything right in the run, settled well, and when I let him down nothing was going to catch
him.
I loved his attitude, he just went about his business like a seasoned racehorse.
Walking around in the mounting yard, he certainly has a lot of presence about him.”
A stunning looking colt, Cadogan fetched $280,000 when offered by Newhaven Park at the Magic
Millions Yearling Sale and secured by Lee Freedman/ Jon Kelly, but was returned to his vendor after
subsequently failing a scoping exam.
Cadogan was foaled and raised at Newhaven for his breeders Bob and Fiona Guth of Galaxy
Breeding, who elected to race the youngster themselves.
He is the first foal of Malibu Moon mare Cadazzle (USA), a half-sister to stakes-winner Miss Catalyst
and daughter of stakes-winner Key to the Cat.
Newhaven Park sold a Pierro yearling colt from Cadazzle at Magic Millions this year for $360,000 to
Domeland Pty Ltd and she will foal to Snitzel this spring.
