December 10, 2014Racy by Name and Racy by Nature
Tara Madgwick – Wednesday, 10 December 2014
Prepared at Warwick Farm as was Unencumbered, the Gary Portelli trained Racy was heavily backed to kick off her career on a winning note and did so with authority.
The daughter of Exceed and Excel jumped well and quickly worked forward to find the front for Josh Parr and when asked for an effort in the straight accelerated quickly to surge clear and win the 1000 metre scamper by a length.
“I know that they have a good opinion of her with some fairly lofty plans and she was very, very good today,” said winning rider Josh Parr.
A $180,000 Magic Millions purchase for her trainer from the Newhaven Park draft, Racy will now be headed back to the Gold Coast for a tilt at the Magic Millions 2YO Classic in January.
“The plan was to go to the sales and buy a two-year-old that we could take back for the Magic Millions,” Portelli revealed.
“She quickly went to $150,000, but they told me to keep going and take her home if I really liked her, so she eventually cost us $180,000.
“She has always shown us a lot of ability, although been very wayward, but she’s really starting to get it right now,”
Well named given her looks and pedigree, Racy is the sixth winner from unraced Saucy Nell, a half-sister by Marauding to Champion Two and Three Year Old Colt Encounter, who won six Group I events in a stellar career.
Racy was foaled and raised at Newhaven Park as was her mother Saucy Nell, whose current yearling, a colt by Exceed and Excel’s triple Group I winning son Helmet, will be offered at the 2015 Magic Millions as Lot 591.
Saucy Nell has foaled again this spring producing a colt by another multiple Group I winning son of Exceed and Excel in Excelebration (IRE).
Newhaven Park will present another stunning line-up of 37 yearlings at the 2015 Magic Millions. Click here to see the draft.
