Four generations of thoroughbred breeders makes this farm one of the best known in the country and a run of recent winners has marked the beginning of a new era of success.

Owned and run by the Kelly family for four generations since the Boorowa property was first purchased in the 1920’s, Newhaven Park is a thoroughbred nursery with a proud heritage and bright future under the stewardship of current stud master John Kelly Jr.

Newhaven Park has an impressive honour roll of past graduates including Golden Slipper winners John’s Hope, Vivarchi, Burst and Prowl, champion two and three year-old colt Encounter, champion three year-old fillies Research and Arborea, not to mention weight-for age star and seven-time Group I winner Grand Armee.

A history like that makes for a tough act to follow, but the winners have flowed from Newhaven Park in the past 12 months proving the picturesque farm is still a premium source of quality performers.

Stakes-winners such as Wylie Hall (Group I South African Derby), Lightinthenite (Group III MRC David Jones Cup), Camporella (Group III WATC Sires Produce Stakes) and rising Singapore star Zac Spirit have paved the way for current season three year-old stars Charlie Boy and Champagne Cath.

Both juvenile winners last season, Charlie Boy and Champagne Cath have blossomed this spring to claim major victories.

The Gerald Ryan trained Charlie Boy ran in all the big Group I events during the autumn, but took the quantum leap when resuming from spell to win the Group II VRC Danehill Stakes at Flemington.

The son of Myboycharlie (IRE) was bought by Triple Crown Syndications for $80,000 at Magic Millions and has won nearly $300,000 for his big group of owners with the promise of more to come.

Foaled and raised at Newhaven for Wilkes Thoroughbreds, Charlie Boy is a Newhaven bred through and through as his grand -mother Pontal Lass, was by the stud’s former champion sire Marauding and won numerous races for the Kelly family including the Group I AJC Flight Stakes.

A brilliant winner of the Listed ATC Reginald Allen Quality last Saturday at Rosehill, Champagne Cath was bred by Newhaven Park and is the best offspring from former good metropolitan winner Mimzical, who was bought by the Kelly’s off the track at the Inglis Broodmare Sale for $75,000.

The wide open spaces of Newhaven are conducive to producing athletes and the current batch of yearlings are loving the warm spring weather as they grow and develop ahead of sales preparations later in the year.
