The Source of Slipper Stars
At a time of year when the Golden Slipper is paramount in the imagination of yearling buyers a farm that knows how to produce a Slipper star will always find their Inglis Easter draft in hot demand.
Owned and run by the Kelly family for four generations since the Boorowa property was first purchased in the 1920’s, Newhaven Park is a thoroughbred nursery with a proud heritage and an impressive honour roll of past graduates.
Newhaven Park has been the source of Golden Slipper winners John’s Hope, Vivarchi, Burst and Prowl, champion two and three year-old colt Encounter, champion three year-old fillies Research and Arborea, Group I stars such as Assertive Lass, Drum, Euphoria, Absolute Champion(pictured), not to mention weight-for age star and seven-time Group I winner Grand Armee.
Under the stewardship of current stud master John Kelly, Newhaven Park continues to produce quality thoroughbreds with the current crop of two and three year-olds racing up a storm this season on both sides of the country and across the Tasman.
Recent winners include Luen Yat Miracle (impressive debut winner in NZ), Maximilian (2 wins at Canterburyand Warwick Farm) and talented Sydney two year-olds Charlie Boy and Champagne Cath, who both proudly sport the time honoured R over K brand.
Further afield in Western Australia, it’s been exciting two year-old filly Camporella that has been flying the flag with great success.
By Exceed and Excel from stakes-winner Really Flying, the Newhaven Park bred Camporella won the Listed WATC Gimcrack Stakes at Ascot last Saturday and has now her last three starts in succession including the $250,000 MM Perth 2YO Classic.
Camporella was purchased by her trainer Dan Morton for $140,000 from the Newhaven draft at Magic Millions and has already won $223,300 in prizemoney proving an outstanding investment.
Her yearling half-sister (pictured above) by top class shuttle sire Shamardal (USA) will be offered at Inglis Easter by Newhaven Park as Lot 475 and is one of five quality youngsters that will be offered at this year’s sale by the Kelly family.
The filly is the fourth foal of Really Flying, who won the Listed Dark Jewel Classic at Scone and traces back to the family of Group I stars Fairy King Prawn and Easy Rocking.
First into the ring for Newhaven will be Lot 14, a dashing Flying Spur colt from former top South American mare Anjiz Star (Arg), a winner of 13 races, two of them at Group I level.
Sadly, he is the last foal of his dam who died prematurely in 2011, her three year-old filly Puhleaz, a full sister to this colt, has shown promise from a handful of starts for Dean Binaisse and was placed at Pakenham last month after the catalogue came out.
One of the better fillies bred by Newhaven Park over the years is Pontal Lass and she features as the dam ofLot 263, a colt from the first crop of Manhattan Rain.
The colt is a half-brother to seven winners led by Group II VRC Wakeful Stakes winner Quays and is from Marauding’s fine daughter Pontal Lass, who won the Group I AJC Flight Stakes and was placed in the Group I VRC Oaks and AJCChampagne Stakes.
This season’s promising Group II place two year-old Charlie Boy is also on the page, his dam Maritime a half-brother to this colt.
Next up is Lot 280, a filly with obvious ‘classic’ leanings being by High Chaparral (IRE) from Group III AJC Adrian Knox Stakes winner Raise, a sister to Group I AJC Australian Oaks winner Rena’s Lady and half-sister to Group II winning stayer Vatuvei.
People talk about ‘running families’ and this filly definitely comes from one as her grand-dam had six foals to race all winners and her third dam had seven foals to race all winners.
Champion sire Fastnet Rock is the hot commodity at the sales and his filly from Sunriseontheoasis (USA) is sure to be much admired when she struts into the ring as Lot 356.
She is the third foal of a US stakes-winner by Gilded Time, who shuttled to Australia for a number of seasons and has established a successful nick with Danehill, who is the sire of Fastnet Rock.
Gilded Time and Danehill have combined to produce 48 winners from 75 runners including Group I winners Barely a Moment, Midnight Oil and stakes-winner Miss Gai Flyer.
