Trainer Cliff Brown produced Newhaven Park bred Zac Spirit a debut winner of the $65,000 Year Of The Snake Stakes over 1200m on Monday. Ridden by John Powell, the well supported Zac Spirit posted a four length victory from Morris (Manoel Nunes) with Yes Baba (Barend Vorster) a head away third.
Jumping well from barrier 4, Powell was content to track the speed set by Morris and Star Academy (Danny Beasley) before popping out three wide passing the 600m mark.
Under a good hold turning for home, Powell allowed Zac Spirit to balance for the run to the line before releasing the breaks. When he asked the gelding for an effort, Zac Spirit let down powerfully and quickly put the opposition away, racing clear for an impressive victory.
Brown purchased Zac Spirit, a half-brother to the Group 3 winner Zac Influence, as a yearling.
“He’s a lovely horse and has never done a thing wrong,” said Brown. “I think he’s got a bit of a future.
“It’s a good result for Mr Wong (of Zac Stable) who puts a lot into his racing and is a great supporter of my stable.”
Brown said he was undecided whether to contest the Singapore Three-Year-Old Challenge with the gelding which kicks off with the Group 3 Singapore Three-year-Old Sprint over 1200m on March 31.
“The Three-Year-Old Series might come up a bit too soon for him,” said Brown.
“He’s a nice horse and has got a future but I would like to see him get another win under the belt before we even think about that.”
Powell, who rode Zac Spirit in his two 1000m barrier trials on January 16 and 29, said the gelding was a “strong type” who will also get over more ground.
“I thought his trial form was only fair but he’s made some good improvement from them,” said Powell.
“He was very professional today. He travelled really well and let down powerfully when I asked for an effort.
“That was only his first start and he’s going to get improvement from the run and will continue to get better with the racing.
“He’s also going to get over a bit further as well.”
Zac Spirit is a three-year-old by Flying Spur from Kidman and was purchased as a yearling for A$140,000. The victory saw Zac Spirit return owners – Zac Stable – around $35,000 for his debut success.
