January 13, 2013Leading Buyers Focus on Newhaven’s Premier Draft
With the four main sessions of the 2013 Magic Millions yearling sale now complete, Newhaven Park was extremely happy with the prices achieved for their yearlings sold during the premier session of the sale.
With the likes of Gai Waterhouse, James Harron Bloodstock, the Hong Kong Jockey Club, Star Thoroughbreds, Peter Moody and Blue Sky Thoroughbreds all purchasing from the draft, each and every one of the yearlings are sure to get to the best possible start to their racing careers.
Some highlights from the draft saw Lot 281, Fastnet Rock filly out of the Street Cry mare Street Match knocked down for $250,000 to the combination of Gai Waterhouse and James Harron Bloodstock, who ended the sale purchasing a total of three yearlings from the draft.
Later in the sale, the very same combination purchased Lot 318, Manhattan Rain x Two Beauties colt for $140,000 as well as Lot 322, Snitzel colt out of the dual Listed-winning Marauding mare Unison for $320,000.
Paul Messara’s Arrowfield Training Centre Pty Ltd and Julian Blaxland’s Blue Sky Thoroughbreds went to $160,000 to secure Lot 285, Manhattan Rain colt from the Red Ransom mare Sweet Ransom, while Lots 317, 383 and 602, were all purchased by a buyer new to the Australian market in Ingordo Bloodstock.
With Lot 602 the top priced-yearling sold from the Newhaven draft, the colt is first foal out of the winning Encosta de Lago mare Hades, herself a daughter of the dual G1-winning, Champion 2yo Hasna. Knocked down for $460,000, the Redoute’s Choice colt has very much the pedigree of a stallion in the making.
Well-known in the United States as being responsible for purchasing the great Street Cry mare Zenyatta as a yearling, it will be interesting to note if the yearlings purchased by Ingordo Bloodstock will stay in Australia or head to the United States.
The second the top-priced yearling from the draft went to Melbourne-based trainer Robbie Griffiths, signing the docket on Lot 562, the first foal from the Redoute’s Choice mare Fiction, herself a daughter of the G1 Golden Slipper winner Polar Success. By Encosta de Lago, the filly will have plenty of residual value once her racing days are over.
Overall for the 17 yearlings sold, Newhaven Park averaged just shy of $180,000 a great result which saw the farm in the top five vendors on averages.Best of luck goes to everyone who purchased a yearling from the Newhaven Park draft and we look forward to following the careers of these yearlings when they hit the track in the coming years.
