First Winner for Myboycharlie
Vinery Stud’s highly regarded stallion Myboycharlie (IRE) opened his winning account when the Gerald Ryan-trained Charlie Boy overcame a troubled run to capture Saturday’s ATC Membership Handicap (1100m) at Rosehill Gardens.
Tightened up shortly after the start Glyn Schofield found the one out one back spot before setting out after the Gai Waterhouse-trained Windjammer.
Sent out a short-priced favourite on the strength of an impressive recent barrier trial win, Charlie Boy (pictured as a yearling)tenaciously reeled in the Bernardini colt to win by half a length. Stratum colt All The Talk was a length and a half back in third.
“That was impressive,” stable foreman Brad Banfield said.
“Gerald has galloped him on his own because he has a tendency to go a bit keen.”
“In his trial he led easily and raced away from them so to do that today augurs well for his next campaign.”
Schofield believes the son of Myboycharlie was as impressive as any two-year-old seen out this season.
“He’s one of the better ones I have ridden for quite some time,” Schofield said
The way he has done it has been most impressive.
“I don’t want to be getting off this one.”
An $80,000 purchase by Triple Crown Syndications from the Newhaven Park draft at the 5th session of the 2012 Magic MillionsGold Coast Yearling sale, Charlie Boy is the first foal of his dam Maritime (Falbrav) a half-sister to Wakeful Stakes (G2) winner and triple Group 1 placed Quays (Royal Academy) out of the Flight Stakes(G1) Pontal Lass (Marauding).
Charlie Boy comes from the first Southern Hemisphere crop by the Prix Morny (G1) winner Myboycharlie (IRE) (pictured) whose yearlings have been much admired.
The son of Danetime looks exceptional value at his 2012 service fee of $8,800.
